I’m James Shireby

Life coach, podcast host and someone
who’s done – and continues to do – this work himself.

I’m a coach, a father and a partner.

I’ve dedicated my life to understanding human health, performance, and what it truly means to live well.

That journey started through sport in childhood, continued through a seven-year military career, and evolved into becoming a personal trainer—and now as a coach working at a deeper level.

Along the way, I realised something important:

Performance alone isn’t enough.

Strength without clarity.

Success without fulfilment.

Achievement without connection.

All of it can still leave a man feeling empty, disconnected and stuck.

Why I do this work

Today, this work is more than a career—it’s vocational.

I work with men who are capable, driven and responsible…

…but quietly struggling.

Men who are doing well on the outside—but don’t feel that way on the inside.

Men who are carrying pressure, responsibility, and expectation—without ever being shown how to process it properly.

My role is to help you build:

Self-awareness

Emotional resilience

Clarity and direction

A life that feels grounded, meaningful and aligned

How I work

I don’t teach theory from the sidelines.

I help men apply psychology, self-leadership, and emotional awareness in a way that actually fits real life—

Work.

Relationships.

Pressure.

Responsibility.

This isn’t about becoming someone else.

It’s about understanding yourself better—so you can lead your life with more clarity, control, and intention.

What I Believe

A man’s life improves the moment he chooses to:

Understand himself

Take ownership

Act in alignment with who he wants to become

– That’s what doing the work really means.

My Purpose

My purpose is simple:

To help you build a life that is aligned with your values, supports your mental and physical health, and allows you to show up fully for the people and roles that matter most.

Not just a life that looks good —

But one that actually feels good to live.

My role isn’t to tell you who to be.

It’s to help you become the most fulfilled version of yourself —

And support you in building a life you’re proud of.

My Story

Where it started

Growing up, I struggled.

I had speech issues, learning difficulties,= and found it hard to make friends.

That left me with low confidence, poor self-esteem and a daily battle to manage my emotions.

For a long time, I didn’t feel like I fit in.

The first turning point

Then I discovered sport.

I wasn’t the most naturally gifted—but I found something important.

An outlet.

A way to channel the anger, frustration, and energy I had been carrying.

Through consistency and effort, things started to change.

Within a year of taking running seriously, I qualified for the National Championships.

For the first time in my life, I felt a sense of belief.

I realised I was capable of more than I had been telling myself.

The army years

In 2001, I joined the British Army.

Over the next seven years, I learned what it really means to push beyond limits.

I developed discipline, resilience, and the ability to lead under pressure.

When I left, I was stronger. More confident. More determined.

But I also carried patterns and habits I didn’t yet fully understand.

From performance to purpose

Since 2008, I’ve been coaching.

I started in personal training—but over time, I realised something important:

Physical performance alone isn’t enough.

Men can be strong, successful, and still feel stuck, disconnected, or unfulfilled.

That’s when my work began to evolve.

Today, I specialise in helping men build resilience, develop self-awareness, and learn how to lead themselves—both mentally and emotionally.

The reality of life

Life has tested me many times.

I’ve been through a serious car accident.

Lived with chronic pain.

Experienced divorce, grief and the loss of a home and a business.

There were times I didn’t know how I’d move forward.

I’ve slept on sofas.

Faced uncertainty.

And had to confront the darker parts of myself.

But I kept going.

What changed everything

Instead of avoiding it, I leaned into it.

I focused on my purpose:

Becoming the best coach I could be.

I doubled down on learning.

Studied harder than ever.

Continued to challenge myself—physically and mentally.

Not to escape my struggles —

But to understand them.

Where I am now

Today, I use everything I’ve learned —

The wins.

The setbacks.

The scars.

The lessons.

To support other men.

Through coaching, content, and my podcast The Work, I help men understand themselves better so they can build stronger, more meaningful lives.

What matters most

The most life-changing moment for me has been becoming a father.

My daughter gives me a deeper sense of purpose than anything else.

She drives me to keep growing, to keep learning and to show up as the best version of myself I can be.

What I believe

Your life experiences hold more value than you realise.

Within them is strength.

Resilience.

Clarity.

But most men never take the time to understand what those experiences have given them.

They just keep moving forward.

You’re standing on more strength, more value and more resilience than you think.

You just need to do the work to see it.
